Being able to learn about your rights in your own mother tongue makes a difference, "the language that is in your body," as Ami Norén, chair of Save the Children Mora, put it when she contacted us to ask if we could produce the coloring book in the Mora dialect.
Of course we could. And thanks to Ami's initiative, the coloring book is now available not only in Mora dialect, but also in Arabic, English, Farsi, Spanish, Swedish, and Ukrainian.
The coloring book became a teaching tool—and a show
Back in Mora, Ami explains that the coloring book in the Mora dialect has resulted in Vika School, from preschool to third grade, working with the articles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child during class time. They have colored and talked about rights and concluded with an inviting show for parents on the theme of children's rights.
- The show was greatly appreciated by students, parents, and teachers alike. It was a pure joy to see how the children used theater, dance, and readings to portray articles such as "Girls and boys are equally valuable" and "I have the right to development," says Ami.
Colored pencils and conversation
As chair of Save the Children, Ami is deeply committed to children's rights and works actively to spread awareness in various ways.
- Children's rights are adults' responsibilities, Ami continues, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child applies to all children. In our local association, we use the coloring book to engage both children and parents. One tip is to print out a few pages, lay them out on the table, and let the conversation flow while the children color.
- These conversations often turn out to be very meaningful. Both the child and the adult gain a deeper understanding.
Knowledge that changes
Ami concludes with a wish:
- If everyone knew about children's rights, it would mean a great deal to all children, not only in Sweden, but throughout the world, concludes Ami.
